Fall Courses Update
OLLI and Colleges 9 and 10. Big News!
OLLI is moving! We have a new campus home. Our general meetings this year will be at the Multipurpose Room of Colleges 9 and 10 where we met last November and last February. Map and parking information.
This is not just a simple move to a greatly improved venue for our monthly Sunday morning general meetings. We've always wanted a deeper connection with the life of the campus and with students and faculty in the rich tapestry of campus life. Our experience with the Ears in Action and English in Action interest groups showed we had something of value to offer to students that is also enormously rewarding for us.
During the spring, an OLLI Facilities Task Force approached the Colleges 9 and 10 administration: Professor Flora Lu, Provost; Deana Slater, College Administrative Officer; and Kyoko Freeman, the now retired College Program Coordinator. (The new person in this position is Esther Wallace.) During a series of meetings we began to imagine what a mutually beneficial relationship between OLLI and Colleges 9 and 10 might be like. Colleges 9 and 10 folks, for their part, warmly embraced the idea of OLLI being a part of their community.
There were many ideas, and we agreed to spend this year exploring possibilities.
Here's one that is already happening: Colleges 9 and 10 offers a program called Language Tables. Enjoy lunch and speak with, or listen to, or engage with speakers of a number of languages. There is more information, below, but the first one is Tuesday, October 13.
Another idea: We are exploring the possibility of OLLI members partnering with undergrads who are not native English speakers and who would love to have the opportunity for informal English conversations. This could be similar to our English in Action interest group that works primarily with grad students. Are there Lifelong Learners who would enjoy meeting with one of these students? If you are interested, please email me at mgordon@cruzio.com.
We will announce other opportunities, including Colleges 9 and 10 lectures and other events that may be of interest to our members.
Stay tuned. And meanwhile do come to our first meeting at the Colleges 9 and 10 Multipurpose Room on October 18.
Colleges 9 and 10 Invites OLLI Members to Language Tables
Do you speak another language? Do you wonder what another language sounds like, or how to say something in another language? Would you like to meet folks who speak different languages and enjoy sharing their languages with others? Then the Language Tables program of Colleges 9 and 10 may be a special treat. Every couple of weeks, the Language Tables program operates over lunch at special tables set up in the Multipurpose room of Colleges 9 and 10. This is the same room where OLLI will be holding all our monthly Sunday meetings this year.
You do not have to be a fluent speaker of the language, or even a rudimentary one. Anyone of any skill level is welcome to sit at any table -- we welcome everyone from casually interested folks to beginning learners to native speakers! Just have an interest in how people can communicate in the different languages. You can ask questions (in English) or try out pronunciation of a new word or phrase. This is an opportunity to stretch and discover with student speakers, while enjoying lunch together.
Everyone is welcome, lunch is available in the Cafeteria adjacent to the Multipurpose room for $10.32. However, you can also bring a bag lunch and enjoy the experience.
The dates for this fall are:
  • Tuesday Oct. 13 from 12 to 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday Oct. 27 from 12 to 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday November 10 from 12 to 2 p.m.
Additional dates will be announced in upcoming newsletters and on our website.
