2017 Alternative Spring Break
Colleges Nine and Ten’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) will explore food justice issues, farmworker families and the Watsonville community.
OLLI’s ASB participation is one of the fruits of our partnership with Colleges Nine and Ten that affords us the possibility of a real learning opportunity with wonderful committed undergrads.
4 ways for OLLI members to participate in ASB
1. Be part of the OLLI team
An opportunity for intergenerational learning and service.
OLLI team members will partner with ASB students in a series of ASB activities
(see schedule below). The 10 members of the OLLI team will receive the readings, meet with Watsonville leaders, and together with ASB students, participate in two days of activities in Watsonville. More information and complete schedules will be available at the special ASB table as you enter the Multipurpose Room at our Sunday, February 19th and March 19th General Meeting, or call Mark Gordon (408) 314-4802 or Mary Caravalho (831) 332-2361 with questions.
2. Bring Flea Market donations for farmworker families
to our February and March General Meetings.
• All sizes of warm adult clothing
• Children’s clothing
• Children’s books in English
• Small appliances in working order (e.g. microwaves, hot plates, lamps)
• Personal items: Shampoo, hand soap, dish soap, laundry soap, TP, and paper towels.
Please bring items to the OLLI Alternative Spring Break table as you enter the Multipurpose Room on Sunday. At other times, items may be left in the large box on the porch of Mary Caravalho’s home, 129 Los Altos Court, Westside Santa Cruz.
3. Diapers! Make a donation to the ASB Diaper Fund
A special need: Diapers! Students during the next month will be collecting money on campus for a Diaper Fund to purchase diapers for farmworker families. An OLLI Diaper Bag will be placed on the ASB table during our meeting to receive voluntary donations to the Diaper Fund.
4. Attend the ASB Panel by Watsonville community leaders.
The Panel will be held on Sunday, February 26, from 3:00 to 5:30 in the Namaste Lounge (behind the Multipurpose Room on campus). All OLLI members are invited to attend the panel discussion. The OLLI Team and their ASB student partners will have an opportunity for Q&A after the panel presentations.
